This is just to say

April 11, 2009

Lies and false apologies was the topic today on This American Life. Act One ended with listeners taking liberties with the poem, This is Just To Say by William Carlos Williams.

This Is Just To Say
by Ronnie Gaubatz with apologies William Carlos Williams

I have consumed
the hearts and lives
that were in
my way

and you likely
thought I was another
type
of lover

Forgive me
they were just there
to comfort me
when I was hurt

Those who know me best can decide how true the facts or how sincere the apology. I invite readers to post a comment with your own take on the original poem, perhaps even make an apology or a confession.

This Is Just To Say
by William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

I love this WCW poem! Do you remember doing imagist poetry as a freshman? It was one of my favorite things that entire year. Your poem is wonderful in response. I’m sorry I missed that segment of THIS AMERICAN LIFE. (Do you listen to David Sedaris on that show? He is so hilarious!)
